Antique Age:
In the light of the findings obtained from the archeological studies carried on the antique period crucibles, in Marmara Island marble production began 2500 years ago. According to the sayings of historian Strabon, the people of Samos and Miletos who came outside to Marmara Island had settled there and established the first settlement in the island.
The people of Miletos had discovered the rich marble sources located on the southeast of the island and began to process them. Some of the pillars of famous Artemis Temple had been made of Marmara marble, this temple is the biggest of the Hellenistic age temples built between B.C 560-550.
Roma Age:
During the Roman age, Marmara Island marble mines had been operated intensively.Within this age, architecture and sculpture works of arts were produced in the marble mines and these pieces were transported to the whole Anatolia, Adriatic, Mediterranean and Black sea shores by Roman commercial vessels. Marmara marble was being sent only in type of blocks or semi-processed way, the ornament and engravings were made on the place of delivery.
Byzantine Age:
In the Bzantine age the pillars and column capitals used the church and monasteryarchitecture were mostly made of Marmara marble. Haghia Sophia and Haghia Irene has also this kind of column capitals. In the Byzantine age, the blocks attained from the mines converted into finished products instead of semi-processed products. The most importand finding that shows us how the marble processing technique in Marmara Island was advenced in the Byzantine age, is the pillar found in Harmanyaş site; the weight of this pillar is apporoximately 180 tons and its 4,45 meters.It could not be transported since it was cracked when it was dislodged from its place.
Ottoman Age:
In the Ottoman age architecture stone engraving art reached to the top. In many work of arts such as Süleymaniye Mosque, Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace and many others, the preference of the architects of the period was Marmara Marble. The architects who used the marble as a building stone, pillar, bearing element, wall covering, floor covering and ornament material gave a special importance to Marmara marble.
